In class, we have been writing and delivering our speeches to our class. The topic I chose to write about was - "Is plastic really a problem?" Do you agree with my reasons>

Plastic - is it really a big problem?

Hi, I am Rewi. If you look around, you'll probably notice plastic of some kind. You're probably using clothes that are somewhat made of plastic. If you have a phone in your pocket, that's mostly plastic So is your computer. Plastic is everywhere… and I do mean everywhere! This is because people make it in large amounts because it is so useful in just about everything people do. That's why plastic waste is becoming a serious problem, especially around the world's coastlines and oceans.

Most plastics are synthetic Something that people make that does not live in the natural world and have two very special features they can be made into just about any shape because they can be moulded. Almost all plastics are made from petrochemicals. That means drugs which people make from fossil fuels like oil and gas.

The first plastic ever made was called Bakelite, invented in 1907. Since bakelite, the list of plastics has got ever longer Most common plastics are polymers. All these can be varied by clever chemists to make all the different types of plastic you see and use every day.

Most plastics last just about for 500 because no life form has yet evolved which can eat plastic. Almost everything else made by humans gets torn down, by microbes.

So let's think twice about using plastic.
